The Cult Hit
For nearly forty years, a Canadian production company called La Fête, and its founder Rock Demers, created magical movies that captivated worldwide audiences.
One of La Fête’s most successful films was an out of this world, high concept, unsettling motion picture called The Peanut Butter Solution. Distributed in the US in 1985, the film became a cult hit and its devoted fan base still obsesses over it, even thirty-four years after its original release.
The Remake
Our intention in developing a remake was to maximize the potential of the cult hit’s high concept. The idea that a boy is given a strange recipe from ghostly intruders which makes his hair grow out of control and that his rapidly growing hair has a special power to paint an alternate reality, is as entertaining as it is creatively exciting.
Our goal in tackling a remake was to connect the dots between these ideas and give audiences satisfying conclusions to the unanswered questions asked in the original. What does Micheal see during the great scare? Who sends the ghostly intruders? Why does Micheal’s hair grow out of control? And most importantly, once he learns that he can paint his way into another reality, what will his quest be?
As we tackled all these elements, the full potential of the story unfolded and we began looking at a tremendously powerful story of grief and the importance in believing in that we do not see.
